Under Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem's watch, federal agents killed Renee Good and Alex Pretti. Led by Secretary Noem, President Trump's immigration enforcement agenda has brutalized families and children here in Northwest Washington and across our country.
As the top Democrat on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, I have fought back against Secretary Noem's efforts to hobble the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), her retaliation against whistleblowers, and her stonewalling of funding to help communities across the country rebuild after disasters.
Secretary Noem's actions have put politics over the public and hurt countless families and businesses.
That is why I support impeaching Secretary Noem, along with 181 of my colleagues in the House. I continue to demand full, independent investigations into the killings of Renee Good, Alex Pretti, and other DHS-related shootings, and full accountability for those responsible.
In addition to supporting the impeachment of Secretary Noem, I voted no on the Homeland Security (DHS) Fiscal Year 2026 (FY26) spending bill. Lacking enough "no" votes in the House, the bill passed the House 220-207, and just last week, the Senate passed the bill as well.
The Homeland Security funding bill does not create accountability for ICE's reckless enforcement agenda that is brutalizing communities in Northwest Washington. I voted no, and I am demanding that ICE follow the same rules as every other law enforcement agency. I am demanding ICE oversight and accountability:
* Prohibiting ICE officers from wearing masks during arrests
* Requiring ICE officers to be trained in de-escalation
* Prohibiting masked ICE officers from using restricted equipment, such as tear gas
* Ending family and child detention
* Ending DHS's use of private detention facilities
* Providing individuals in immigration detention with unlimited communication with legal counsel
* Repealing the Alien Enemies Act, which President Trump has used to deport immigrants from Venezuela with no due process, by accusing them of "invading" the United States
* A complete and independent investigation into the killing of Renee Good in Minneapolis
I am fighting for fair treatment, legal due process, and justice in the immigration system.
