Dear John,
Thank you for your outreach to Congress last week. Your calls worked, and we were able to prevent the Senate from passing a bill funding the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) without any accountability measures.
However, our work is not done. DHS and its federal agents cannot continue to perpetrate gun violence in our communities, violate our constitutional rights, and operate without consequences.
Last week, Senate Democrats struck a deal with the White House [[link removed]] to extend funding for DHS for two weeks to allow time for negotiations around accountability measures and reforms related to immigration enforcement operations. While Congress is discussing the accountability measures that must be in place in order for DHS to receive its full year funding, it is crucial that they hear from you about the reforms that you would like to see.
Please make calls to congressional leadership and leadership on the U.S. House and Senate Appropriations Committees and demand that they require accountability measures for DHS moving forward. Use our guide [[link removed]] for contact information for the target representatives and senators, a list of accountability measures, a sample script, and draft email language to send as a follow-up to your call.
Thank you for your support in these trying times.
In solidarity,
Team Community Justice
