For women and girls in Somalia, each day is a relentless battle for survival. Hunger, violence, and displacement exact a heavy toll on their mental health and physical safety.
The UNFPA Safe Space in Mogadishu is a respite where survivors like Ikran receive mental health counseling, medical referrals, legal support, and vocational training so they can rebuild their lives.
18-year-old Ikran’s marriage, which should have been a source of hope, turned into a cycle of fear and severe violence. Physically injured and emotionally shattered, she eventually lost the will to live.
But the compassion of supporters like you provided a path to healing.
Ikran found a lifeline at a Women and Girls’ Safe Space in Mogadishu. There, she was welcomed with compassion and without judgment. Through individual counseling and the support of other women, she gradually began to heal.
Today, Ikran is free from abuse. "When you lose all hope and the will to live, then suddenly relief comes to you," she says.

Fatuma, a psychosocial counselor in Mogadishu, sees this toll every day.

Fatuma provides psychosocial counseling to Ikran at the women and girls’ safe space in Kahda, Mogadishu.
“Sometimes the scars are not visible from the outside,” she says. “The battle may be within.” Despite the emotional toll, she remains committed to standing with survivors.
Right now, the need is urgent: displacement and ongoing insecurity in Somalia mean thousands of women face heightened risk of violence and abuse every day.
