Today, February 3rd, marks the anniversary of the ratification of the 15th Amendment.


The 15th Amendment was ratified in 1870, prohibiting the government from denying a citizen the right to vote on the basis of race. Yet, during this time, voters of color continued to face extreme violence and discriminatory policies that prevented this right – including poll taxes, literacy tests, grandfather clauses, property owning requirements, and Jim Crow laws. Even with the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920, granting any citizen the right to vote regardless of sex, Black, Indigenous, Latina, and Asian American women were not granted the same right as white women. It wasn’t until the passage of the State Voting Rights Act of 1965 that real protections were put in place to ensure the freedom to vote for all voters of color.


Now, 156 years later, we are still fighting back against acts of blatant voter suppression and attempts to disenfranchise voters.


Just recently, Republicans in Congress introduced the so-called “Making Elections Great Again Act,” which, counter to its name, poses the largest threat to voting rights in our nation’s history. According to the Democracy Docket, this bill goes further than the SAVE Act by mandating constant voter-roll purges, centralizing voter surveillance, requiring proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote, requiring repeated eligibility checks, and more.


As a voting rights organization, we will always work to protect and expand voting rights in Pennsylvania to make it easier for all eligible voters to participate in the democratic process. We will fight back against any attempts to suppress and disenfranchise voters.
