The past year has seen more damage to our Democracy than we could have imagined — and we had imagined it would be pretty damn bad. What is our responsibility to the people who have done this? Stuart Stevens makes the case that America has a damaging pattern of offering grace and redemption to the powerful without demanding truth or contrition — from Jefferson Davis to the failure to prosecute Trump after January 6th.
Contrition might feel just and moral, but it has the effect of normalizing and justifying bad behavior.
Democrats need more fight, less civility.
