Updates from D.C.

Don Lemon and Georgia Fort were arrested by federal agents while exercising their First Amendment rights. I sent three individual letters to Pam Bondi (Attorney General of the United States), Jim Jordan (Chair of the House Judiciary Committee), and William Blier (Acting Inspector General of the Department of Justice), because I will not sit by silently while this Administration tries to silence the truth and disregard our nation’s Constitution.

An Update on Liam Ramos

I joined Representative Joaquin Castro (TX-20) in conducting oversight at the Dilley Detention Center, where we witnessed absolutely alarming conditions. No child should have to endure what five-year-old Liam has experienced. At his age, he should be worried about snack time or recess—not whether he will eat, see his mother, or if he will ever return home.

I am relieved that a federal judge ordered the immediate release of five-year-old Liam Conejos Ramos and his father. The judge's ruling made clear what never should have been in question: this child's detention was unlawful, unjustified, and deeply harmful.

In his opinion, the judge delivered a pointed reminder that the Constitution is not optional. He rejected the use of administrative warrants, condemned the government's disregard for basic constitutional principles, and made clear that traumatizing a child has no place in a nation that claims to be governed by the rule of law.

Liam and his dad have since returned home to Minneapolis, but our work doesn't stop here. I will continue to conduct oversight to ensure that no child has to experience what Liam experienced.

Our Children are in Danger

We are talking about a child. There is no policy, no rhetoric, and no political agenda that justifies the actions that are taking place in our country today.

I am committed to doing everything in my power to ensure Liam’s story isn’t repeated.

The Trump Administration is Full of Liars

The actions of this administration are racist, hurtful, and wrong. While the administration is busy lying—characterizing all immigrants as “criminals”—the facts tell a different story.

Most of the individuals that ICE is currently targeting have done exactly what the law requires—they are showing up to their court dates and following the laws. Yet, this Administration continues to detain them without due process, placing them in these ill-equipped and inhumane detention centers.

I sat down with MSNow to speak on the realities these families are facing under this Administration.

Maher and Wael Tarabishi Deserve Better

Image

The circumstances surrounding the detention of Maher Tarabishi and the refusal to grant a humanitarian release after the death of his son are deeply disturbing.

I was made aware of Mr. Tarabishi's situation on December 11, 2025, when he had already been detained for more than six weeks. Given the serious humanitarian concerns involved, I raised this matter with the appropriate federal agencies and urged them to exercise compassion so he could return home to care for his critically ill son.

According to his attorney, Mr. Tarabishi entered the United States lawfully with a visa. Although his asylum application was denied in 2006 and a deportation order was issued, he was later permitted to remain in the country under a supervision order because his son, a U.S. citizen, was dependent on him for care.

After Mr. Tarabishi's son passed away on January 23, 2026, I again contacted the relevant authorities to request humanitarian consideration, even under guard, so that he could attend his son's funeral. No response was provided

No parent should ever be denied the chance to bury their child. This is not enforcement. It is cruelty. I will continue to use my voice and oversight authority to demand accountability and a system rooted in basic humanity.
