Last month, the Trump administration published a new proposed rule targeting women, girls, and working families struggling against hunger. With this rule, Trump wants to bypass Congress and cut billions of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, which help millions across the country keep food on the table. Deny food assistance to children and families? Not on our watch.

With this latest notice of proposed rulemaking, Trump is moving forward with a radical proposal — which Congress rejected just last December — that would take food away from children, women, and families when they need it most.
This proposed rule on SNAP aims to:

1. Punish working-class families who still struggle to put food on the table. The proposed rule limits a provisions called “categorical eligibility.” It sounds wonky, but it’s a critical tool that the majority of states use to extend SNAP to working families with incomes just over the income eligibility cut-off, who often have significant expenses like child care and housing. Restricting categorical eligibility would re-impose a “cliff effect,” which would threaten SNAP benefits for 3.1 million people.

2. Take away free school meals. If this proposed rule were finalized, about 500,000 children who lose their SNAP benefits would also lose access to free school meals.

This isn’t the first time that Trump has come after SNAP following the passage of the bipartisan Farm Bill last December. In March, just over a year after enacting massive tax cuts for the wealthy and large corporations, Trump again proposed a budget that would have dramatically cut SNAP benefits. In February, Trump proposed another rule that would have limited access to SNAP for women facing systemic barriers to accessing and reporting enough hours of work and their families.

Cutting SNAP benefits is part of the Trump administration’s larger attack on women, children, and families, and it’s just another way for him to finance massive tax cuts for corporations and the ultra-wealthy. Enough is enough.
