Friend, we just sued the Trump administration over its unlawful, discriminatory ban that prohibits people from 75 countries — representing nearly half of all immigrant visa applicants from around the world — from being able to live, work, and reunite with their families in the United States.
This ban completely upends the existing visa process and arbitrarily blocks people from immigrating to the United States on the basis of nationality. As a result, people who have successfully navigated our complex immigration system suddenly had the rug swept out from under them.
We’re challenging the ban on behalf of Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc. (CLINIC), African Communities Together (ACT), and eleven plaintiffs who have been directly harmed, including working people seeking employment in the U.S. and U.S. citizens who were in the process of securing a visa for their loved ones and now are indefinitely separated from their family.
To justify this overreaching ban, the Trump administration has baselessly claimed that people from the named countries present a “public charge” risk — meaning that they would be primarily and permanently reliant on the U.S. government for long-term subsistence. This is a false narrative. In fact, nationwide, most applicants for immigrant visas are not even eligible for most government assistance programs and remain ineligible for years once in the United States.
The references to “public charge” are also a thinly veiled pretext to discriminate against people of color, rooted in the same odious racial stereotypes the Trump administration has deployed in its campaign to smear immigrant communities. Over 85% of the countries listed in the ban are countries with majority non-white populations.
This blanket ban is discriminatory, exceeds the government’s authority, violates the Constitution, and strips working people and families of their rights — and we’re going to fight it with everything we’ve got.
Stay tuned,
