Dear John,

Our region was experiencing a really good summer period, until the heavy weather struck and caused devastation in our communities and other parts of the North Island.

The Coromandel is no stranger to these types of weather events, but it never gets easier seeing properties damaged, towns isolated by road closures, and people losing their treasured possessions.

Our communities have been battered and we know that the impacts of these storms last much longer than the initial event. Thankfully, we also know that the recovery is underway and we won’t stay down for long.

The Government announced several support packages, such as activating the Temporary Accommodation Service, providing additional funding for Mayoral Relief Funds, and reimbursing marae that provided shelter, food and care to people in need.

Finally, I want to thank our first responders and contractors who assisted our communities during the height of the storm. It’s a massive relief to know that there are so many people willing to do their bit to keep people safe in times of need.

SCOTT'S NEWS

PM Visits Storm-Battered Communities
The day after the heaviest of the weather, I joined Prime Minister Christopher Luxon as he visited communities in Thames and Tairua.

We started with a briefing at the Thames-Coromandel District Council, which was also an opportunity to acknowledge the work that emergency management teams were doing behind the scenes. I came away very impressed by their professionalism and their willingness to put the community first.

After the briefing we headed to Tairua to check in with folk on the ground who had been directly affected by the worst of the weather. This was a simple gesture to reassure people that they had not been forgotten and that support would be made available to get them back on their feet.

It was heartening to see people in good spirits, despite the adverse circumstances that had been thrust upon them.

The Prime Minister’s Statement to Parliament
As per tradition, Parliament began the year with the Prime Minister giving a statement to the House of Representatives. He emphasised our Government’s commitment to fixing the basics and building the future, as well as the progress we’ve made to getting the country back on track.

After his speech, I had to opportunity to take the floor and highlight our local communities as we recovery from January’s heavy weather. I referenced the lessons that we’ve learned from past storms and cyclones, and the need to build more resilient roads and drainage to mitigate the impact of future events.

Fixing the Basics and Building the Future
The PM confirmed that the General Election will be held on Saturday 7 November 2026.

No matter what you think of politics or politicians, we are fortunate to live in a functioning democracy. We’re one of only a very few nations on the planet that have an unbroken democratic tradition going back more than 150 years.

I’m standing again as the National Party’s candidate for the Coromandel Electorate, and I believe the changes we’ve been making will benefit us as a nation now and into the future. Foremost I will be seeking your Party Vote for National because a strong National Party vote will ensure we anchor the next government and continue to lock in the gains our country has made during the last three years.
