John,

While Don Lemon’s arrest made national headlines, another journalist was quietly arrested in Minneapolis — and far fewer people noticed.

Her name is Georgia Fort, she’s an Emmy Award-Winning independent journalist who reports in the Twin Cities. She was one of only two journalists present for the sentencing of George Floyd’s killer, Derek Chauvin.

Federal agents came to her home, with her kids present, and arrested her for livestreaming a Minneapolis protest.

Before we go on, we want to make you a promise. COURIER will never back down from Trump’s efforts to silence and intimidate the press. We can ensure that courageous journalism survives, but only with your continued support:

After Fort’s arrest, civil rights and press freedom groups immediately sounded the alarm.

The National Association of Black Journalists, the Committee to Protect Journalists, and civil liberties advocates all warned this was a chilling attempt to intimidate the press and scare reporters away from covering abuses of power.

They’re correct.

This isn’t just about one arrest. It’s about sending a message to journalists everywhere:

Cover ICE. Cover protests. Cover the Trump administration’s abuses — and you could be next.

If journalists are too afraid to show up, they know they won’t face accountability for their abuse.

COURIER isn’t backing down.

We’re still exposing ICE.
We’re still documenting the terror they are waging in our communities.
We’re still telling the stories others are being pressured to avoid.

But we can only keep doing that with grassroots support.

If you believe there has never been a more important moment to support independent journalism, please chip in $25 or whatever you can today to help fuel COURIER’s courageous coverage.
