Environmental Services Shines During Winter Weather Response
When Winter Storm Fern brought freezing temperatures, ice, and hazardous conditions to Fort Worth, Environmental Services staff stepped up in a big way to keep our city moving and our residents informed. Teams worked long hours, some braving icy conditions, to support the City’s response efforts with professionalism and care.
Administrative and leadership staff collaborated closely with the Office of Emergency Management and its Joint Emergency Operations Center (JEOC) to support activation efforts and coordinate response priorities. In the field, crews came together to clear ice and snow from the Drop-Off Stations and the Environmental Collection Center so residents could safely access these essential services once conditions improved. The Communications team worked diligently to publish winter weather updates and service information to the public, helping our community stay informed throughout the storm.
Meanwhile, staff also connected regularly with City partners — like Republic Services, Waste Management, and UpSpire, among others — to coordinate contracted services and partner facilities, identifying areas of concern and plans to address weather-related challenges.
These efforts reflect the dedication and resilience of Environmental Services Department who put service to others first. Thank you to every team member who helped us weather the storm — your hard work and commitment continue to make Fort Worth a stronger, more connected community.

Reuse more. Waste less.
Simple reuse habits fit easily into everyday life. Bringing a reusable bag when shopping, refilling a water bottle instead of buying a new one, or choosing durable items over single-use products are small actions that add up over time. Prevent waste before it’s created. Reuse helps conserve resources, reduces the amount of products needed, and lessens the amount of material that ends up in landfills.
Big impacts reach beyond the household. Fort Worth residents can reuse at home, at school, at work, and while out in their community. Small changes also help reduce waste citywide while supporting Fort Worth efforts. Make it part of your everyday routine – choose to reuse!

Big News for Recycling
and Reuse in Fort Worth
Fort Worth has been selected to receive $4.8 million through the Solid Waste Infrastructure for Recycling (SWIFR) grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The City of Fort Worth was one of 17 local governments selected to receive funding, chosen from over 300 applications after two rounds of consideration.
Once received, Fort Worth will use these grant funds to strengthen its recycling infrastructure, improve post-consumer materials management, and enhance local waste management systems. The City also plans to launch a new pilot reuse program while expanding its recycling education and outreach program.
