John,
The New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, (New START), is the last remaining nuclear arms control agreement between the U.S. and Russia, who own the vast majority of the world’s nuclear weapons.
It’s also set to expire on February 5, 2026.
If New START expires, there will be no limits at all on the expansion of the U.S. or Russian nuclear arsenals for the first time in more than 50 years. Both nations would be able to build and deploy nuclear weapons with no transparency or oversight, and there would be no more safeguards in place to slow a new arms race.
This isn’t a distant, hypothetical risk we’re talking about, it’s an imminent one. Without a plan to replace New START, the consequences of its expiration will be immediate and difficult to reverse.
We’ve been here before. The last nuclear arms race poisoned entire communities with radiation, wasted billions of taxpayer resources, and repeatedly pushed our world to the brink of nuclear destruction. We cannot afford to repeat that history.
🗣️ Tell Congress to publicly support U.S.-Russia arms control to extend New START limits and stop a new nuclear arms race before it begins:
A diplomatic solution is still possible, but we must act now.
Thanks for stepping up,
