Here's an update on what's happening with the federal secret police that Donald Trump has deployed to Portland (and soon, across the country):
*Late last week, Senator Mitch McConnell refused to even allow a vote on the Senate floor on my amendment that would block the use of unidentifiable federal police, stop unmarked vans and the snatch-and-detain tactics on our streets, and block their deployment on our streets without the invitation of local officials.
*As the Senate debates COVID 4, the latest emergency funding package, I'm pushing to attach my No Secret Police in America amendment to that legislation. Senator Chuck Schumer, the Democratic leader, told MSNBC that there is "broad support within the Democratic caucus" for adding it to COVID 4.
*My colleagues, Reps. Suzanne Bonamici and Earl Blumenauer--both of whom represent parts of Portland--are working this week to add a similar amendment in the House to the Department of Homeland Security appropriations bill. Speaker Nancy Pelosi has been unwavering in her criticism of Trump's actions, saying, "These are not the actions of a democratic republic."
*At my request, the Inspector General at the Department of Homeland Security has begun an investigation into the use of force by DHS officers in Portland.
*And yet, despite all this, the Trump administration is doubling down--announcing on Monday that they intend to send scores more Homeland Security officers to Portland.
As long as Donald Trump keeps this up, we'll keep standing up to him. I'm heartened to see so many Portlanders stand up peacefully to engage in enthusiastic non-violent resistance. From the leaders of color and allies who have been protesting for months, to the "Wall of Moms", led by Black women in Portland, to the many military veterans who are standing strong and living up to their oath to defend the Constitution, the freelance reporters who are unwavering in their courageous coverage, and everyone else who just keeps showing up.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Leadership matters. Elections matter.
Who sits in the Oval Office matters. And who leads the US Senate matters. Donald Trump is engaging in political theatrics to distract us from his failures and rile up his core supporters.
We cannot let him win. We cannot let Mitch McConnell retain control of the Senate. Pitch in now and let's make sure that we flip the Senate, eject Trumpism from the halls of power, and get this country back on track.
