“We dug trenches to hide and sheltered inside them. There was shelling every day.”
These are the words of Raina , who was 22 and pregnant when El Fasher, the capital city of North Darfur State in Sudan, erupted in violence. The city had been under siege for 18 months, leaving hundreds of thousands of people without adequate food, medicine, or support.

Women and children fleeing violence in El Fasher wait to receive malnutrition and maternal health services at a UNFPA temporary clinic.
In October 2025, the siege culminated in a massacre that took the lives of at least 60,000 people. Today, many survivors like Raina are living in crowded displacement camps where healthcare and essentials like food and fuel remain elusive.
Sudan is the world’s largest humanitarian emergency, and millions of women and girls are enduring violence, displacement, and hunger every single day — but right now, you can help. Will you make a gift to provide urgent support to women and girls in Sudan and where it’s needed most? [[link removed]?]

A pregnant woman receives a prenatal check-up at a UNFPA temporary clinic in Sudan.
Dr. Ikhlas , a displaced obstetrician and mother of three, described the conditions of a blockade: “Between my house and the Saudi Maternity Hospital [where I worked] there were more than 100 bombs a day. I would sleep overnight at the hospital, because if I tried to go back home I could be hit by a bomb. Many of my colleagues were killed that way.”
She and her colleagues resorted to desperate measures. “We worked using cut-up bedsheets and mosquito nets — we did everything we could. We were performing procedures like amputations outside the operating room.”
Today, Dr. Ikhlas is displaced but continues to provide medical care to pregnant women like Raina and Farha . Many of the mothers she treats have received little to no prenatal care and have spent days or even weeks fleeing on foot, carrying small children, and without adequate food or water.
“We had no one with us. My children’s father, my father, and my brothers were all killed. I was exhausted… When I arrived, I was sitting in the heat, under the sun, without supplies or anything to eat. Dr. Ikhlas found me and took me to Al Dabba Maternity Hospital," shared Farha.
Thanks to Dr. Ikhlas, Farha gave birth at the hospital. “She brought me everything I needed,” Farha shared. “She stayed with me throughout, and even after I was discharged, she continued to follow up with me until she brought me here [to the clinic].”
