Synthesis is a quick overview of our recent work, amplifying our partners' work, and sharing important environmental stories.
February is Black History Month. Here at WCA, we know that the fierce progress made in the conservation movement would not have happened without the contributions and leadership of Black people and communities. Check out our blog about Black conservationists in Washington and in history. [[link removed]]

Democracy Lobby Day 2026 was a major success! Hundreds of advocates took the Capitol on January 23 to lobby their lawmakers and rally for democracy. We pushed for proposed laws that would prohibit mass voter challenges, require preclearance of local election changes, provide ballot access in jails, and make it possible for Washington communities to opt in to ranked choice voting. Check out our blog capturing the atmosphere of the day here. [[link removed]]
Native Advocacy Day was held on Thursday in Olympia. About a hundred attendees showed up to lobby their lawmakers on issues important to Native and Tribal communities. Advocates urged action on a range of concerns, such as the salmon extinction crisis, Tribal sovereignty, voter suppression in Native communities, housing and homelessness, immigrant rights, and more.
In 2024, Initiative 2066 misled voters into thinking it was about access to gas in homes, while seeking to undercut climate and clean air laws. We joined a coalition of environmental organizations to legally challenge I-2066's legality. On January 22, the Washington State Supreme Court heard oral arguments on the case. In several months, the court is expected to make a ruling. Stay tuned for more updates on the fight against this unconstitutional attempt to undermine energy affordability, air quality, and climate action.
Last year, state leaders cut wildfire resilience funding in half from $120 million to $60 million. This decision threatens to undo years of progress and goes against a clear legislative commitment to proactive wildfire prevention. Demand that your legislators restore full funding for wildfire resilience! [[link removed]] This legislative action is an Environmental Priorities Coalition budget priority.
The Department of Ecology is leading a rulemaking on air quality in overburdened communities. This rulemaking requires Ecology to reduce air pollution in highly impacted communities. Submit a comment to encourage stronger air quality protections and ensure clean air for all! [[link removed]]
