Friend,
During my presidential campaign, I called for Reparations for descendants of enslaved Africans. Reparations are past due and necessary to addressing the racism our country was founded upon.
The structural racism stemming from slavery has influenced every aspect of American life and provided the economic undergirding for our country. We have to talk honestly about the impact of forced labor, torture, and generational trauma meted out against Black bodies. This system was codified by our founding fathers. And talking about Reparations begins the conversation to reconcile and repair that harm.
That’s why I endorsed Texas Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee's sponsored H.R. 40 bill — it would fund a commission to study Reparations, specifically for descendants of enslaved Africans. This is a great step in the right direction, and I am committing to supporting the Congresswoman to build momentum for this bill.
I can’t do this without you.
That’s why I’m asking you to sign on to support Reparations today.
This conversation is long overdue. This bill is the first step in righting our most grievous wrong.
Thank you,
Tom
