If you haven’t heard already, last week the FBI seized records from an
election office in Fulton County, Georgia—an alarming escalation of
Trump’s ongoing effort to discredit the 2020 election that he lost.

And just recently in Minnesota, Trump’s Department of Justice tied the ICE
raids that are happening in Minneapolis to the state’s refusal to hand
over their voter rolls. This is part of a larger effort by the DOJ to
seize state voter rolls across the country without authority. Senate
Democrats are warning that these tactics risk voter privacy, undermine
local election officials, and could be used to cast doubt on future
election results.

These events are just the latest reminders that the guardrails around
elections our democracy relies on are under real strain. And these aren’t
isolated incidents. Over the last few years, we’ve seen repeated warning
signs about the Trump administration’s and Republicans’ willingness to
place pressure on election officials and systems:
* They’ve cast doubt on election results in areas where Trump lost
* They’ve tried to intimidate election workers
* They’re politicizing the courts
* And after Republicans lose, they rewrite the rules in their own favor
The U.S. election system is completely safe, secure, and transparent.
Yet Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress are not interested in
advancing free and fair elections. That’s because they know their agenda
is deeply unpopular, and they can’t win by playing by the rules, so
they’re trying everything they can to rig the system instead.
To prevent this, there will be legal challenges that many organizations
will be supporting. They’ve won before, and we’re confident they can win
again.
We also have to win back governing power to hold accountable those sowing
distrust in our elections. One key thing everyday people can do is
organize now, in competitive swing districts, to help secure a large,
decisive Democratic House victory in the November midterms. Control of the
House will mean oversight and subpoena power, giving Democrats the ability
to investigate abuses and hold the line when norms are tested.
