Dear John,
Every February is a time for reflection and celebration of Black history in America.
At a time when so many civil liberties are under attack, it is important to uplift the voices of the trailblazers, like Audre Lorde, Marsha P. Johnson, and James Baldwin that have left an indelible mark on advancing equality for marginalized communities.
According to GLSEN’s National School Climate survey, 82% of LGBTQ+ youth reported feeling unsafe in school — and recent censorship laws only cause more harm to Black queer students, who are already some of the most marginalized and excluded youth in our nation.
As we continue to face anti-democratic attacks on learning and truth, we must empower supportive school leaders, educators, and staff to act as guardians of our democracy.
We are dedicated to making sure schools are sites of safety, connection, power and ultimately, liberation.
Our work to make this a reality for Black LGBTQ+ students does not end when February is over.
