This month, Moms and Students Demand Action kicked off our 2026 Advocacy Days—events where volunteers and survivors of gun violence meet virtually or at their state capitol to hold lawmakers accountable.

Advocacy Days give lawmakers the chance to hear directly from their constituents about the bills that matter most, and show just how strongly their communities support—or oppose—specific pieces of legislation. Our signature red T-shirts have become a staple at statehouses across the country. Join us: Sign up for an event near you today!

Is state advocacy the only way to make a difference? No, and it's not the best way to make change in all states. To end gun violence, we need people-powered action that builds community and visibility nationwide—join a Public Awareness Day in your state!

Advocates from Alexandria City High School's Students Demand Action chapter and others across the state traveled to Richmond this month to advocate for stronger gun safety laws during Virginia's Advocacy Day. Joined by Moms Demand Action volunteers and other student leaders and groups from across the state, they urged lawmakers to advance legislation addressing assault-style weapons, safe gun storage, ghost guns, and enhanced background checks.

Thanks to Moms and Students Demand Action volunteers' advocacy, Virginia lawmakers took steps to strengthen their proposed assault weapons ban!

With new leadership in Virginia—including Moms Demand Action volunteer-turned-Governor Abigail Spanberger—and action like this, students say they feel hopeful their voices are being heard. As chapter founder Ruby Gerstein said, "our generation shouldn't have to trade our sense of safety just to get an education."

On Saturday, January 24, Alex Jeffrey Pretti—an ICU nurse whose life's work was caring for veterans—was shot and killed by federal agents in Minneapolis. Our hearts mourn with the Minneapolis community, especially as this tragedy comes just weeks after the killing of Renee Nicole Good.

This violence is not normal and never should be. We demand accountability for the killings of Renee Nicole Good, Alex Jeffrey Pretti, and the countless others who have been harmed by this violence and chaos. Send a letter to your lawmakers to make your voice heard now.

New year, new rankings! Our 2026 Gun Law Rankings take a fresh look at how every state approaches gun safety—scoring all 50 states on 50 proven policies and comparing those scores to real-world gun violence rates.

Once again, the results tell a consistent story: stronger gun laws are linked to fewer gun deaths. See how District of Columbia ranks in 2026 and explore where every state stands in the latest Gun Law Rankings.

Case to watch: The Supreme Court recently heard oral arguments in Wolford v. Lopez, a major Second Amendment case that could decide whether states can set a default rule banning guns on private property open to the public unless the owner gives express permission.

Everytown Law is closely watching the case, which centers on Hawai'i's common-sense law that prioritizes property rights and public safety. If the Court overturns the law, it would effectively impose a national mandate that guns are allowed into private businesses open to the public by default, stripping all 50 states of the power to protect the autonomy of property owners. A ruling upholding Hawai'i's approach would preserve states' ability to respect local preferences and protect property owners' choices. Read more.

USA TODAY spotlighted Everytown Law's response to President Trump's comments following the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti at a Minneapolis protest, highlighting the growing contradictions in the administration's rhetoric on the Second Amendment.

Eric Tirschwell, executive director of Everytown Law, called it "completely inconsistent" to champion the right to publicly carry firearms while blaming a man for lawfully exercising that right. He emphasized that the reaction to Pretti's killing reflects "across-the-board opposition to the chaos, the lies and the victim blaming" that followed the tragedy.

The piece also cited Everytown research showing armed protests are nearly six times more likely to turn violent or destructive. Together, the reporting underscores Everytown's role in grounding the national debate in facts, constitutional consistency, and public safety. Read more.

This January, Moms Demand Action volunteer and Demand a Seat graduate Emily Jabbour was sworn in as Mayor of Hoboken!

During her inauguration speech, Jabbour shared how meaningful the support of Moms Demand Action has been to her since she first became a volunteer in 2016. She also announced that one of her very first actions as mayor would be to join Mayors Against Illegal Guns, signaling her continued commitment to gun safety.

Jabbour joins several Moms Demand Action volunteers who were inaugurated into elected office across the country this month—notably including Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger! We're incredibly proud to see our volunteers turning advocacy into action, and we're excited to watch how they shape policy from the inside.

P.S: What we're watching next month 👀 On February 4th, a hearing will be held for Donald Trump's nominee for ATF director, Robert Cekada. This role plays a critical part in enforcing our gun laws and keeping communities safe. Follow and keep an eye on Everytown socials for updates!
