Dear friend,
Black History Month is a time to honor the Kentuckians whose courage have shaped our Commonwealth and our nation.
Muhammad Ali showed the world that principles matter more than any championship title. bell hooks, the Hopkinsville-born scholar, challenged us to think more deeply about race and justice. Georgia Davis Powers, Kentucky's first Black state senator, fought tirelessly for civil rights legislation. These giants paved the way for future generations of Black Kentuckians to lead.
That legacy continues today in Frankfort. Senator Gerald Neal has served for over three decades, championing criminal justice reform and civil rights. Senator Reggie Thomas continues to fight for working families and education. Senator Keturah Herron, the first openly LGBTQ+ person elected to the Kentucky General Assembly, is leading the charge on justice reform. And Representative Pam Stevenson, the first Black woman to lead a legislative caucus in the Kentucky House, is serving as Floor Leader and fighting for an affordable life for all Kentuckians.
Black history is Kentucky history and Black voices have been essential in making our Commonwealth better for everyone.
As the first Black chair of a major political party in the history of our Commonwealth, I think about the doors that were opened for me and the ones we still need to open for others. This month, and every month, we honor the sacrifices of those who came before us by continuing the work they started, and building a Kentucky where every family has the opportunity to thrive.
