Hi John. I hope you and your family are well. A lot has been going on over the last several days, so I wanted to share a quick note.

But first of all, I'd like to touch on the senseless killings in Minnesota, which I know is top of mind for so many.

Two U.S. citizens — Renee Good and Alex Pretti — were recently killed. Like so many of you, I'm angry and heartbroken. People should feel safe in their own neighborhoods. But right now, families are afraid to leave their homes.

Local law enforcement should protect our streets — not masked, militarized federal agents operating with zero transparency. This shouldn’t be who we are as a country. The administration must answer for what happened. That includes immediate, concrete action to stop the senseless killing of our neighbors.

I've consistently voted for bipartisan laws to secure our border. But it’s clear Congress must do more. Both parties must work to comprehensively reform our immigration system so it can be smart, strong, and humane.

Here's some additional news for you and your family:

Winter Storm Resources

First, I know we're all still coping with the impacts of the recent winter storm.

If you missed my last message, I shared various winter weather resources. Here are a few you can access in case you need them:

Image
• Weather.gov: A website provided by the National Weather Service. They're the U.S. federal agency responsible for providing accurate weather forecasts.

Road conditions: The Kansas Department of Transportation has a website at kandrive.gov to keep you updated. You can also call 511 on your phone for road condition updates.

Winter safety: Did you know home heating is the second leading cause of home fires? Or that 63 percent of temperature deaths are also related to cold exposure? Learn more about how to keep your family safe at ready.gov.

Securing Kansas Community Projects

I understand people are tired of all the chaos and division in our country right now.

I know it isn't easy. But if our democracy is going to work, it's time to listen to each other and start healing. Leaders must find common ground to make a difference in people's lives.

That's why I'm pleased both parties are finalizing major legislation that will support many local projects in our region.

Here are just a few of the projects that are on the way:

• Electrical grid upgrades for the University of Kansas Medical Center.
• Improvements at the intersection of U.S. 69 and 191st street in Spring Hill.
• A design project for the Kansas Avenue Bridge. This is about reconnecting our region's urban freight corridor.

I was glad to help secure these projects, and it was possible because both parties and local leaders worked together.

This is how government should operate, so people can see real results.
