This has to be one of Trump’s most vile and disturbing efforts yet:
His administration is attempting to dismantle long-standing protections for immigrant children to prolong their detention .
It’s shameful — so this week, I led a coalition of 20 attorneys general in opposing Trump’s attempts to terminate the Flores Settlement Agreement.
This settlement has been in place for nearly 30 years. It establishes protections to ensure that children in immigration custody are treated with care, held in state-licensed facilities, released without unnecessary delay, and protected by basic standards for health, safety, education, and well-being.
By terminating the Flores Agreement, the administration can expand family detention and keep children confined for longer periods of time — often in facilities that are not licensed, not properly overseen, and not designed to meet children’s needs. To remove these protections could cause significant long-term harm to these kids’ physical, mental, and emotional health.
Let’s be clear: NO child deserves to be left in potentially unsafe or unhealthy conditions, or subjected to prolonged confinement. [[link removed]]
That’s why we filed a multistate amicus brief urging the Ninth Circuit to block this cruel attempt and keep these critical protections in place.
Unfortunately, we’ve been here before. When the first Trump administration tried to end the Flores protections, California fought back — and the courts agreed. But now, Trump is once again trying to strip them away.
Shame on this administration for using vulnerable immigrant children as political pawns to further their extreme ideological agenda.
I am committed to continuing the fight for the protection, welfare, and safety of all children, regardless of their immigration status, and I need to know you’re with me.
Add your name to our petition to say loud and clear: No child should experience prolonged or unsafe conditions while in immigration detention. [[link removed]]
Thank you for being a part of this work. It’s never been more important.
In solidarity,
Rob
