** ...after all, taxpayers got robbed when Marjory bought the thing.

SF Gate ([link removed]) (8/26/19) reports: "Marjory Kaplan returned to her 2017 Prius parked in Pacific Heights to find it absolutely ransacked. But as she describes to KTVU, it wasn't a laptop or backpack the thieves were after. They made off with a heavy — and pricey — piece of the car. Kaplan said the car was left overnight Thursday on Webster Street between California and Sacramento. Friday morning, she says she found the $10,000 high-voltage battery gone...It's been a rough couple months for Bay Area Prius owners. In July, there was a rash of thefts of the car's catalytic converters."

E&E News ([link removed]) (8/27/19) reports: "Federal agencies have been reluctant to buy electric vehicles because of high prices and a lack of charging infrastructure, the government's internal watchdog said in a report released yesterday. The Government Accountability Office report examined agency compliance with green-fleet requirements. Several agencies own or lease thousands of vehicles as part of their standard operations. Since 1988, they have been required by various statutes and executive orders to reduce their fleets' petroleum use and greenhouse gas emissions. The report found that in fiscal 2017, most agencies reported meeting these requirements by buying fuel-efficient vehicles and reducing miles traveled...Out of more than 16,000 vehicles acquired by agencies in 2017, only 373 were EVs and 4,500 were hybrids. Furthermore, EVs accounted for 1% of the alternative fuel vehicles in agencies' fleets in 2017, while plug-in hybrids
accounted for 11%. Cost was a top concern cited by agency officials."

(8/26/19) reports: "Walmart Inc. isn’t the only corporation that has seen its Tesla Inc. solar panels catch fire. On Friday, Amazon.com Inc. said a June 2018 blaze on the roof of one of its warehouses in Redlands, California, involved a solar panel system that Tesla’s SolarCity division had installed. The Seattle-based retail giant said by email that it has since taken steps to protect its facilities and has no plans to install more Tesla systems. News of the Amazon fire comes just three days after Walmart dropped a bombshell lawsuit against Tesla, accusing it of shoddy panel installations that led to fires at more than a half-dozen stores. The claims threaten to further erode Tesla’s solar business at a time when the company is fighting to gain back market share."

(8/26/19) reports: "Enjoy the last days of summer, because a wild ride apparently is in store this winter. The Farmers’ Almanac is predicting that 'bitterly cold winter conditions' will be in place from areas east of the Rockies all the way to the Appalachians, with the coldest outbreak of the season arriving during the final week of January and lasting through the beginning of February...The Farmer's Almanac said that this upcoming winter will be 'filled with so many ups and downs on the thermometer, it may remind you of a "Polar Coaster."' That active winter will, according to the publication, cause a slow start to spring as winter lingers across the Midwest, Great Lakes, Northeast, and New England. The Farmers’ Almanac says it bases its long-range forecast 'on a mathematical and astronomical formula developed in 1818.'"

(8/27/19) reports: "President Donald Trump, asked for his view of climate change, said America's wealth 'is under its feet,' and he's not going to squander it on 'dreams' and 'windmills.' Trump noted that the United States is now the world's number-one energy producer, and he said production will only increase as more pipelines come online. 'It's tremendous wealth,' Trump said, 'and LNG (liquefied natural gas) is being sought after all over Europe and all over the world. We have more of it than anybody else. And I'm not going to lose that wealth. I'm not going to lose it on dreams, on windmills, which frankly aren't working too well.' Trump said he wants the 'cleanest water' and 'cleanest air' on earth. 'That's what we're doing.'"
