I’m a Food & Water Watch volunteer working in Pennsylvania to protect my community from plastic pollution and the onslaught of AI data centers threatening our water and climate. Since 2023, I’ve been donating to the organization as a member.

Together, we’re fighting back against these threats — and winning. But we, like others across the country, are up against the most powerful economic and political forces there are: Big Tech and Big Oil. That’s why I’m asking you to start your Food & Water Watch membership.

I moved to Pennsylvania after I retired to be closer to family. In my new home, I was looking for a community where I could make a real difference and protect a livable planet for my two grandsons — and I found that with Food & Water Watch.

It was at our Food & Water Team Pennsylvania volunteer meeting that I found out there were two data center proposals within a few miles of my home. I learned about how AI data centers guzzle our water resources, drive more fossil fuel production, cause disruptive noise pollution, and drive up energy rates — and I was immediately worried for my community.

But because of Food & Water Watch, I also felt confident and ready to fight back.

As individuals, it can be easy to feel powerless in the face of Big Tech developers trying to run roughshod over us. But with Food & Water Watch, we’re getting organized, sharing information, and building the people power we need to protect our communities and environment from this menace.

Each of us can make a difference. As a volunteer, I’m writing letters to elected officials, planning commissioners, and other local leaders in my area informing them about the threat of AI data centers and urging them to take action. With support from my local Food & Water Watch organizers, we’re gaining traction among local officials to defend our communities.

Working on the ground in Pennsylvania, I’ve seen firsthand how my membership dues are put to use supporting Food & Water Watch to protect communities from polluting industries. My — our — membership dues go toward paying skilled organizers who work with volunteers like me to educate elected officials and mobilize our communities, toward producing hard-hitting research that exposes Big Tech and Big Oil’s schemes, and toward educating the public about what’s happening and how to fight back.

Together, our efforts in Pennsylvania blocked a massive AI data center campus proposal last year — but there is much work to do to block the staggering number of proposals in my state and across the country.
