Today in North Carolina, a bomb cyclone is dumping snow across our state. But we’re still kicking off a whistle stop tour from the mountains to the coast [ [link removed] ], rallying folks from every corner of the Old North State to join our Moral March from Wilson to Raleigh [ [link removed] ]. (If you’re close to any of our stops after the storm, we’d love to see you there [ [link removed] ]. Tomorrow’s service at Watts Street Baptist Church [ [link removed] ] will be virtual only.)
We’ve set an agenda to stand up against the effort to steal a Congressional district so extremists can prop up an immoral agenda. We’ve said, “No, not on our watch. This is our Selma. Others marched then, but it’s our time now.”
It’s our time to love forward together.
So over four days, from February 11th thru the 14th, we will be walking from Wilson, in the old First Congressional District that they’ve gerrymandered, to Raleigh. We’re going to start the day before early voting starts in the primary. And we’re going to get to Raleigh and hold a mass people’s assembly on Valentine’s Day.
Right now, all over this nation, we must declare that we are going to love forward together. The same people who are attacking our vote already voted to take our healthcare. They are using the money they secured by cutting Medicaid and nutrition assistance to occupy our cities and raid homes without warrants. They are the same folks who can’t stand the gay community and stand against funding public education. So we have to have a unified vision.
We’re saying it’s time to vote our love, vote our truth, vote our mercy.
This needs to happen in every state - state-based, micro-level organizing. We’re beginning right here in North Carolina because this is our home. This is our inheritance. It has been passed down to us with a great tradition of nonviolent struggle in the Southern Freedom Movement.
Our Moral Moment is helping to launch next week’s whistle stop tour with this video, “Always A Star In the East,” that celebrates the great tradition we’re walking in. Thanks to Franklin Golden for producing this, and thanks to those of you who are able to pay for a subscription to help support this kind of story-telling as we work together to remind one another who we are.
We look forward to sharing the stories of some of the stars that are rising in this season to reclaim the tools of their government. Stay tuned, and forward together.
Our Moral Moment w/ Bishop William Barber & Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove is and always will be free to all subscribers. We’re grateful for paid subscribers who help make productions like “Always A Star In the East” possible.
