Green Party of Canada

A month of Green impact.

Dear Friend,

January started with Trump announcing he would withdraw the United States from the UN climate treaty.

Elizabeth pushed back immediately. As someone who helped establish that treaty, she pointed out that Trump's move is unconstitutional and called on Canada to demand legal proof before accepting it.

A week later, she was pressing the Prime Minister on his China visit, joining Human Rights Watch in demanding that human rights not get traded away for economic deals.

Then the violence escalated.

ICE killed two Americans in Minnesota. Elizabeth condemned the violence and pointed out that Canadian companies are doing business with ICE. She called on Canada to stop that complicity and suspend the Safe Third Country Agreement with the US.

And she discovered something else you should know about. Just a couple of months after supporting Alberta’s push for another pipeline to the BC coast, the Liberal government quietly gutted its marine spill response program in January. They laid off the experts who are called on when marine life and wildlife are in harm’s way from toxic spills. The kind of spills that happen frequently, we just don’t hear about them because they’re not big enough to make the news.

When Elizabeth raised these layoffs in the House of Commons, even Liberal MPs were taken by surprise.

She did that, and a whole lot more during the first week of Parliament. Elizabeth called out the government for rushing through new laws without proper review. She raised concerns about a bill that criminalizes peaceful protest. She presented petitions on housing and disability rights, pushed back on mandatory minimums, and shared the name of a recent victim of intimate partner violence to make sure every MP remembered that the need for action is urgent and personal.

That's what the work of a Green MP looks like. Reading the bills. Asking the questions. Connecting the dots.

By-elections are coming. These races matter because they're where Green candidates can cut through the noise and gain support. But only if we're ready.

This month, our supporters helped build up that readiness. On this last day of January, will you help us finish strong?
