When I ran for Mayor of Clarkston as a first-time candidate, I was told I was:

“Too young. It was too soon. I was being too unrealistic.”

I didn’t listen to the naysayers -- I listened to the voices of my community. Neighbors who were hungry for change and ready for fresh, new leadership that put them, not special interests or corporate PACs or political agendas, first.

That’s how I became the youngest mayor of the most ethnically diverse square mile in America. There’s a lot the rest of our country can learn from our progressive, inclusive, thriving community.

When I was elected, I remember being told that my progressive ideas would bankrupt Clarkston and turn us into a crime-ridden, drug haven.

We proved them wrong. Big time.

Under my tenure, Clarkston became the first city in Georgia to implement a $15 minimum wage for city employees, we made Election Day a holiday, and decriminalized simple possession of marijuana.

Our economy is thriving, we’re one of the safest cities in the state, and we’re working toward becoming 100% clean energy powered.

If you believe healthcare is a right, that every American should be able to access a good paying job with benefits, that diversity makes us stronger, that hatred has no place in our country, and that climate change is a threat that needs action now, then I need your help.

The odds might be against us and we’ve got some tough fights ahead, but together, I know we can win.
