Folks, this has been a heavy month for our country.
Like so many of you, I’ve been thinking a lot about what’s been happening with ICE this week — and about the fear and anger so many people are feeling.
Something is deeply wrong in America right now, and powerful people are telling us that the solution is to go after immigrants and vulnerable people — people who are just trying to do the best that they can to make a living and raise a family. People who want the same things I do.
The Trump administration wants us to believe that it’s their fault we’re struggling to pay the bills, afford health care, and keep up with costs.
But let me be clear about something: It’s not the people on the bottom who caused this. There’s not a single working person here in Lewiston or Portland or Caribou who’s making my health care cost too much. It’s not immigrants who sent prescription drug prices skyrocketing, or jacked up housing costs.
The people who’ve been screwing us are the rich and powerful. They’re Wall Street, the private equity firms, the billionaires, and the corporate executives who rigged our system to funnel more and more money to the top. They’re the Trump administration and billionaire donors who are squeezing the working class — and now they’re trying to cover their asses by blaming the people at the bottom.
Scapegoating immigrants is the oldest trick in the book. It’s about fear. It’s about division. It’s about getting working people to fight each other while the folks at the top keep cashing in.
I won’t stand by while our neighbors are used this way.
I’ve spent my life fighting for the working class — and that means standing up when people with power try to pit us against each other. There are more of us than there are of them. A lot more. And if we come together, we can elect leaders who actually understand what it’s like to live paycheck to paycheck. Leaders who know the problem isn’t the family down the street — it’s runaway corporate greed.
Mainers deserve better than race-baiting and fearmongering. Americans deserve better than being divided while the rich get richer. I believe we are better than this.
That’s why I’m in this race. And it’s why I’m asking you, one last time this month, to help me keep building a campaign that fights for people on the bottom — not the powerful at the top.
If you can chip in $5, $10, $25, or whatever’s meaningful to you, it will help us finish this month strong and keep this movement going. [[link removed]]
