The Week in Review
Happy Friday!
I hope you had a wonderful week. I am grateful to serve you all in the 119th Congress. Read below to see what I’ve been working on this week.
Supporting President Trump’s Executive Order on Birthright Citizenship
I signed onto an amicus brief to the Supreme Court, led by Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), supporting President Trump’s Executive Order (EO) on birthright citizenship.
On January 20, 2025, President Trump signed EO 14160, “Protecting the Meaning and Value of American Citizenship,” to end automatically-granted birthright citizenship to children born in the United States to illegal alien or temporary-visa-holder parents. Progressive groups immediately moved to block the order, arguing that it violates the Fourteenth Amendment, and radical federal judges ruled in their favor. The Supreme Court agreed to hear the Trump Administration’s challenge to the rulings in Trump v. Barbara, with oral arguments scheduled for this spring.
The Fourteenth Amendment’s Citizenship Clause, however, was not intended to confer birthright citizenship to the children of illegal aliens or legal aliens who are in the United States temporarily. Incorrect implementation has created a warped incentive for pregnant foreign nationals to enter the United States for the sole purpose of giving birth here and conferring citizenship to their children. The Wong Kim Ark case, heard by the Supreme Court in 1898, is progressives’ go-to defense for irresponsibly and incorrectly extending birthright citizenship to children of illegal aliens. Wong Kim Ark’s parents, however, had been permanent domiciled residents of the United States at the time of his birth. They weren’t illegal aliens in the country for birth tourism.
I’m honored to stand with my colleagues in support of the President’s efforts to end incorrectly-applied birthright citizenship. The privilege of United States citizenship is a priceless and profound gift that should not be granted to those who abuse our laws.
I’ll keep you posted.
The brief may be read here.
Attending the Ribbon-Cutting for Hadrian’s Grand Opening in Mesa
I was honored to attend and speak at the grand opening of Hadrian’s newest facility, located in Mesa.
Hadrian’s innovative technology is changing how the world thinks about modern manufacturing and setting a new global standard for production. American excellence is on display right here in Arizona.
Thank you to the Hadrian team, local leaders, and the workers and families who made this celebration possible.
Hosting Yuma Farmers in My Mesa Office
I was glad to host Yuma farmers in my Mesa office to hear directly about the challenges facing Arizona agriculture.
Our farmers and ranchers are the backbone of our economy, and I will continue fighting for policies that protect their livelihoods and keep American agriculture strong.
