Hey, John,
Our electoral work this cycle has been all about installing and defending Green New Deal Champions all over the country. The Green New Deal movement’s final showdown of the Democratic primaries takes place in Massachusetts on September 1st—in just over a month.
On that day, we’ve got to replace a corporate money-loving, Green New Deal-opposing, Medicare for All-blocking incumbent with our man Alex Morse, as well as defend the seat of the Green New Deal’s co-author, Senator Ed Markey himself, against the Kennedy political dynasty.
There are two ways to help these campaigns get the word out:
First, you can contribute a few dollars to their campaigns so they can let Massachusetts voters know who’s really on their side. [[link removed]]

Richard Neal is one of our biggest obstacles in bringing the Green New Deal to life. He is the Chair of the House Ways and Means committee—which means he controls the money. This committee decides how tax money is budgeted and spent, and since Neal opposes the Green New Deal (the only member of the MA delegation to do so) it would be hard to win with him controlling this seat.
Kicking him out and replacing him with Alex Morse would mean we’d have a progressive leader with a terrific record of championing green initiatives in the House instead. Alex grew up in a working class household and, after getting a scholarship for his hard work, came home to Holyoke to give back. At 22 he was elected the youngest and first openly gay mayor in the city’s history. In his four terms, he transitioned the last coal power plant in the city and moved Holyoke to 92% carbon-free energy, reducing the city’s energy consumption by 20% and creating tons of good jobs—cutting the unemployment rate in half. He doesn’t just believe in the Green New Deal, he’s laid the groundwork for it locally. This would be a major win for our movement.
And let’s not forget we’ve got to secure the seat of our ally Ed Markey. His record of support for us and our values speaks for itself. He was the only member of Democratic leadership who backed Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez when she came to Congress, worked with us to introduce the Green New Deal, has been working behind the scenes with us to lay the groundwork for legislating on it in 2021, more recently has led the charge being outspoken about Trump’s gross mishandling of COVID-19, and is a proud proclaimer that Black Lives Matter.
And that’s not even getting into his decades of important work toward racial justice, passing fuel efficiency standards (the biggest emissions cut in world history), securing a free and open internet, Medicare for All, and more. Ed’s an OG.
But he’s being challenged by an opponent, Joe Kennedy III, who is riding off his family name and legacy in Massachusetts to try to take out one the nation’s most progressive Senators—and one of the few Democratic politicians who actually stands alongside social movements. We’re normally big fans of primaries! But Joe still hasn’t given a compelling reason for why he’s running. Which leaves us feeling like it’s just about advancing his own career.
We can’t lose this seat to someone running just for the clout. We can’t have the experience, leadership, and pure drive of Ed Markey replaced with the entitlement of someone who just views politics as the family business, especially not in 2021, when we might actually have a chance to deliver on the moment Ed has been building toward his whole career: passing federal legislation to tackle the climate crisis.
With your contribution, Alex and Ed can hold their own against these big money opponents, securing some of the most powerful victories we could possibly hope for this year. September 1st is fast approaching, and voting has already begun. Can you pitch in to help? [[link removed]]
It’s our final stretch of the primary season. Let’s finish strong.
