Caravan of Love
 Celebrating Dia De Reyes
This January, our Caravan of Love crossed the border with a very special purpose: celebrating Día de Reyes and bringing joy to children and families in Tijuana.

Thanks to everyone who donated toys, organized toy drives, and showed up with so much heart, we were able to turn generosity into smiles, laughter, and moments of joy for families who deserve so much more.
We visited Mary Cookie with Madres y Familias Deportadas en Acción, where community, resilience, and love filled the space. This Caravan of Love brought together 14 participants, including 11 new volunteers, traveling in 8 cars and reaching 97 people in total.

The love didn’t stop there. We also left additional items with Luis from our partner organization, Psicólogos Sin Fronteras, who will help distribute them through Ejército de Salvación and to other families in need who were unable to attend the gathering.

Volviendo A Casa
Rest in Peace, Marcelo Anaya Sanchez
Today we honor the life of Marcelo Anaya Sanchez, the latest recipient of our Volviendo a Casa program.

Marcelo was a 41 year old barber from Michoacán who migrated in hopes of supporting his partner and four children. After losing his job and struggling to find work, he made the difficult decision to travel north so he could provide for his family, build a home, and one day return to be reunited with them. Tragically, Marcelo passed away in the Dulzura, CA desert. The cause of death remains unknown, as his body was found after being exposed to the harsh desert conditions for an extended period.

Through Volviendo a Casa, we are providing support to help his family cover burial expenses and bring Marcelo home for a final goodbye. We are grateful to have worked alongside Funeraria La Paz to support this case.

Marcelo’s partner is now a single mother of four, navigating unimaginable loss. Your support makes it possible for families like Marcelo’s to find dignity, care, and compassion during their most difficult moments. If you are able, please consider donating.

Day Laborer Outreach
Thank you Books and Blankets!
We held our latest Day Laborer Outreach in collaboration with Books and Blankets, visiting all three local Home Depot sites. In past years, we typically connected with about 40 laborers per site. This year, we saw 75 laborers total, reflecting the growing fear many day laborers are experiencing. Many waited in their cars or chose not to show up at all.

With the help of five dedicated volunteers, we distributed essential work gear including gloves, safety glasses, earplugs, hats, cooling towels, and shirts, along with food like cookies, pan dulce, oatmeal, and fresh fruit. Each care package also included hygiene items such as wet wipes, deodorant, and toothbrushes and toothpaste.

It was both moving and heartbreaking to see how appreciative the laborers were, and how often they needed reassurance that the items were truly for them and free. One of the biggest differences this year was the eagerness to read and ask questions about Know Your Rights cards, with many carefully placing them in their wallets.

We are deeply grateful to the volunteers who showed up and understood the importance of this outreach. Being present and engaging directly helps humanize people who are so often unseen.

Water Drop
Collective Care in Action

On January 17, Border Angels and Borderlands Relief Collective came together for a joint water drop in an area where two people lost their lives last spring. With over 40 volunteers covering four routes, we returned to this land with intention, placing lifesaving supplies across 8+ drop sites, including 180 waters, 100 electrolyte drinks, 200 cans, and 22 care packages

This work is about showing up where loss has already occurred and refusing to let it happen again. When organizations collaborate, care reaches farther. We will continue coordinating, returning, and doing everything we can to prevent more deaths in the borderlands.

Pancho Rabbit and the Coyote
We were deeply honored to be part of the world premiere of Pancho Rabbit and the Coyote, a beautiful bilingual chamber opera for and with children, presented by Bodhi Tree Concerts and inspired by Duncan Tonatiuh’s beloved book 🐰🌵

Through music, storytelling, and the joyful voices of children alongside world-class artists, this tender production opened hearts to the realities, resilience, and humanity of migrant and immigrant families. Pancho’s journey in search of his papa reminds us that behind every migration story is love, hope, and courage.

We are grateful that all proceeds from this powerful evening supported Border Angels and our life-saving work. Thank you to the artists, organizers, families, and community members who made this moment possible.
Educational Program
This weekend, Border Angels partnered with UCSD Eighth College through Kat’s Critical Community Engagement course, blending classroom learning with direct community outreach.

On Friday, we joined two classes to share about Border Angels and our work across San Diego County. For many students, this was their first introduction to the realities of immigration work in our region. During the Q&A, students engaged deeply with topics such as detention centers and our Familias Reunidas Bond Program, learning about the stark differences between immigration bonds and criminal bail bonds.

On Saturday, students joined us for Day Laborer Outreach, visiting two Home Depot sites and distributing 45 care packages with food, water, hygiene items, and work gloves. The students also decorated the bags with messages of solidarity, which were warmly received.

At the Fairmount site, one laborer shared that when he first saw our group arrive, he feared it was an ICE raid, a reaction that reflects the constant fear many day laborers live with, as well as an acute awareness of how they are perceived. Another laborer, spoke about the frustration of being viewed as “stealing jobs,” despite doing physically demanding work without access to basic protections. We have seen growing interest from laborers in legal consultations and Know Your Rights (KYR) cards, underscoring the urgent need for continued outreach and education.

We are grateful to Kat and her students for showing up with openness, compassion, and a commitment to learning alongside the community.
