Tell Congress: Protect Press Freedom Now > [link removed]

Friend,

This morning, federal agents arrested journalists Don Lemon and Georgia Fort. Their “crime”? Covering the community response to ICE violence in Minnesota.

These arrests are all-out assaults on the First Amendment.

The Trump administration is criminalizing journalists and protestors in an attempt to shut down reporting and dissent. They’re trying to silence people who have the courage to speak the truth and deviate from the official narrative – and they’re particularly targeting Black, independent journalists. We need Congress to act now.

Add your name to our petition demanding Congress take real action to protect press freedom. *One click on the link or button will instantly add your name to our petition if we have your details on file.*

To the United States Congress:

The arrests of journalists Don Lemon and Georgia Fort represent a dangerous escalation of the Trump administration's attacks on the First Amendment. You must act now to protect our essential constitutional rights.

Call Attorney General Pam Bondi before Congress. Reintroduce and pass the PRESS Act. Reform the Espionage Act so the government stops treating journalists like criminals. And reassert everyone’s right to record so the state can’t crack down against those engaged in acts of journalism.

Reporters Don Lemon and Georgia Fort were documenting conditions on the ground in Minneapolis as federal agents continue to escalate violence. A magistrate judge already rejected the Trump administration's case against Lemon last week, but Attorney General Bondi ordered the arrests anyway – targeting two Black, independent reporters on the frontlines.

Federal agents also arrested civil rights attorney Nekima Levy Armstrong, St. Paul school board member Cauntyll Allen, local politicians and others for participating in a protest that was organized to demand that a church’s pastor resign from his position leading the local ICE field office.

While corporate media capitulate to this administration’s demands, independent journalists are leading by example — reporting under increasingly dangerous conditions with targets on their backs.

Free Press Action has and will continue to track these First Amendment violations. We need you to add your voice: Please sign our petition calling on Congress to protect press freedom. *One click on the link or button will instantly add your name to our petition if we have your details on file.*
