John,
Welcome to the latest edition of Emily’s Notes, updates from Washington’s 6th District and Washington, D.C.!
• Impeach now – I’m still reeling from seeing footage of federal agents killing a second American in the streets of Minneapolis. The attempt by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to label Alex Pretti and Renee Good as “domestic terrorists” is yet another reason we must impeach and remove her immediately.
What started with a small group of us has now expanded – 160+ House Democrats have signed on to our Articles of Impeachment, and even some Republicans are calling for Noem’s resignation and removal.
The impeachment process will also allow us to get more information about ICE and CBP conduct in detention centers, including the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma.

• End the freeze – Secretary Noem hasn’t just made poor decisions about ICE. She also (unlawfully) canceled key disaster-prevention funds, including $87 million for levee construction in the Aberdeen-Hoquiam floodplain. We’ve seen the damage floods can do to our state, and I’m working to restore the Aberdeen-Hoquiam project and protect thousands of homes and businesses.
• I'm down to hold everyone accountable — Speaking of unlawfully withholding… Whether it’s Bill Clinton, Attorney General Pam Bondi, or the President of the United States, no one should be able to simply refuse a subpoena to testify about Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes. As I said in the Oversight Committee, this is about getting the full truth about Epstein’s horrific crimes against women and girls. It’s not a partisan game.

• Finally, on a brighter note – So much has happened in the last few weeks that this news got buried: 17 Republicans broke with their party leadership and joined Democrats to extend ACA subsidies and stop healthcare costs from skyrocketing for millions of Americans. I hope the Senate takes some bipartisan inspiration and passes it immediately
Now is the part where I ask you for an end-of-month donation.
What a week it’s been.
We saw ICE attack civilians, including the use of tear gas and pepper spray. We saw them act as an occupying army in the streets of Minneapolis. We saw children being detained and deported, or used as bait to capture their parents. We saw federal agents kick down doors and invade homes without warrants. And we saw ICE and CBP kill two Americans; others died behind closed doors.
The Big Ugly Bill gave ICE and CBP $170 billion – larger than the military budget of most countries. And that bill passed by four votes in the House, 218-214.
With all the talk about “flipping seats,” it can be easy to forget that the elections aren’t just red versus blue. By lending early support to Democrats in swing districts, we’re doing what we can to turn the tide, deliver for working people, and prevent greater tragedies.
We held town halls in red districts, hired a Political Director, and sent thousands of critical grassroots dollars to competitive candidates like JoAnna Mendoza – with your help, we can do even more! Please chip in $25 or any amount today to fuel our organizing and flip the House →
