Democrat,

We are all horrified by the murder of VA ICU nurse Alex Pretti at the hands of masked ICE agents in Minneapolis, only days after Renee Good was murdered and another resident was shot. The Trump administration is trying to smear Alex’s character and justify his murder. But we know the truth. We’ve seen the videos and know he was an upstanding healthcare worker who took care of veterans.

We in New Jersey stand in solidarity with the people of Minnesota as they remain in the streets protesting these policies and defending their communities. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem is leading a dangerous agenda that is targeting US citizens, ripping apart communities, and killing people. She has also gone after members of Congress like our very own Congresswoman LaMonica McIver for conducting oversight on ICE detention facilities. She must be fired. And if Trump won’t do it, she should be impeached.

Read more below about how Governor Mikie Sherrill is taking action to protect communities from this federal overreach and dangerous practices.

If you live in the governor’s old congressional district, NJ-11, there’s a special election underway. Early in-person voting is currently available through February 3. Election Day is February 5. Make sure you have a plan to vote!

— Chairman LeRoy J. Jones, Jr.

SHERRILL’S FIRST 100 DAYS

Across the country, we’ve seen ICE raids surge in communities with agents arriving masked and without notice to local law enforcement or elected officials. This is taking place in New Jersey, including conducting a raid in Morristown that involved detaining a high school student and leaving a six year old girl by herself after taking her father.

Governor Sherrill, alongside Acting Attorney General Davenport, is taking steps in the coming days to track and report ICE operations in our state to better keep communities safe. They are launching an online portal [[link removed]] , similar to the one in place in New York, that allows residents to upload digital content documenting ICE activities.

THE IMPACT OF NJ GOP CONGRESSMEN’S VOTE TO CUT HEALTHCARE ACCESS

Last year, Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress set off a healthcare crisis by decimating Medicaid and refusing to extend ACA premium tax credits in their “Big Ugly Bill.”

Congressmen Tom Kean Jr., Jeff Van Drew, and Chris Smith all voted for this bill.

When House Democrats tried to extend the ACA premium tax credits for more than 20 million Americans, Congressmen Jeff Van Drew and Chris Smith blocked it.

Now 1.3 million fewer Americans have enrolled in health coverage and are at risk of going uninsured entirely. Enrollment in New Jersey is down nearly 4% compared to last year. On top of that, more Americans are signing up for cheaper, lower-tier insurance, leaving them on the hook for higher costs if they need care.

It’s time we took back Congress. We do that by flipping all three red NJ districts blue.

CHAIRMAN JONES RE-ELECTED

Read Chairman Jones’s statement on his re-election to serve as chair of the NJDSC:

“2025 was a defining year for New Jersey Democrats. We elected our first female Democratic governor, grew our majority in the state assembly with districts we haven’t represented in years, and elected local leaders in towns across the state. It was an honor of a lifetime to be the chairman of the party as we accomplished what many thought was impossible. I want to thank the New Jersey Democratic State Committee for putting their confidence in me to lead as chairman for another term. We have a great foundation to build off of and 2026 will be even better as we fight to take back Congress and elect Democrats up and down the ballot.

I also want to congratulate Vice Chair Peg Schaffer, Secretary Clary Azcona-Barber, and Treasurer Shantè D. Palmer on their reelection and am looking forward to getting to work together for another term.”
