John,

From day one, my administration's response to COVID-19 has been grounded in science and data. The only way we get through this pandemic is if we take to heart what public health experts have to say. It's the best thing we can do to protect ourselves and our loved ones.

As we look toward school starting up again in the fall, those decisions have got to be grounded in the science and the data, too, which is why I'm delaying in-person classes until after Labor Day. I know how tough it has been for families to make do at home while schools are closed - but all of us have a responsibility to keep students and educators safe from harm.

That's why I was so disappointed - so angry, even - to hear that the Trump administration is trying to force schools to reopen in the fall.

Donald Trump is ignoring guidance from his own CDC and pushing for in-person classes like nothing is wrong. And Betsy DeVos is doubling down - threatening to withhold federal funding from schools that won't comply. Are you kidding me?

Look, I wish things were different. I wish we could send our kids back to their classrooms and have everything go back to normal. But that's just not reality right now. And what's clear is this: Donald Trump and Betsy DeVos need a reality check.

I know where I stand - and I'll never stop raising my voice for New Mexico's students and educators. But I'm asking 750 people like you to answer just one question for me right now:

Do you think we should listen to public health experts instead of extremists like Donald Trump and Betsy DeVos?
