John,
This weekend, we’ve got a major winter storm forecasted to affect South Florida. We could be seeing some of the coldest weather we’ve had in 15 years — like windchills dropping the temperatures into the 20s!
And let's be honest, we are not built for the cold like this. But here’s the thing: this is not just unpleasant weather. These temperatures can be dangerous for our seniors, kids, the unhoused, and anyone without reliable heat. So here's what you need to know and do:

* Check in on family, friends, and neighbors who might be vulnerable, especially seniors and those who are chronically ill.
* Make sure your pets are warm or keep them inside.
* Check your heater, and if you use space heaters, keep them away from curtains and never leave them unattended.
* If you go outside, dress in loose, comfortable layers, and don't forget your hat, scarf and gloves.
* If you or anyone you know is experiencing homelessness, shelters are available. Call 311, and ask for help.
* Never bring grills or generators inside to stay warm . Carbon Monoxide is invisible, and it can be deadly.
Let’s think of this winter storm and prepare the way we do for hurricanes. Be prepared, stay safe, and make sure to check on each other.
