News from Congressman Mike Levin

Dear Neighbor,

Like many of you, I have been deeply troubled by recent reports involving the actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), including the tragic deaths of Alex Pretti and Renee Good. Any loss of life involving federal authorities deserves careful, independent review.

Public safety depends on trust. That trust is built when government agencies follow the law, respect constitutional rights, and operate transparently. When serious questions arise, they must be answered openly and honestly. That is why I have called for a full, independent investigation into these incidents and into the leadership and oversight of the Department of Homeland Security.

Accountability is not partisan. It is fundamental to good government.

Responsible Oversight of Federal Agencies

Play ButtonWhy I Voted No on DHS Funding
Congress has a duty to fund agencies that protect our communities. We also have a duty to make sure those agencies operate professionally, lawfully, and with appropriate safeguards.

Last Summer, I voted against a Republican bill that increased ICE’s budget by more than $75 billion without strengthening oversight or accountability standards. My concern was simple: any increased funding should go hand in hand with clear rules, transparency, and respect for due process.

More recently, as part of negotiations in the House Appropriations process, my colleagues and I proposed commonsense measures, including:
     • Requiring judicial warrants for home entries
     • Clear standards for use of force
     • Body-worn cameras
     • Explicit protections for U.S. citizens and lawful residents from deportation

These are not radical ideas. They are basic safeguards that strengthen law enforcement and protect public confidence. Each was rejected.

Until meaningful protections are in place, I will continue to advocate for responsible oversight and reform.
Leadership and Responsibility

Play ButtonKristi Noem Must Resign

Strong agencies require strong leadership. Leaders must be willing to uphold the Constitution, enforce the law fairly, and intervene when problems arise.

Under Kristi Noem, we have seen abuses ignored. We have seen oversight obstructed. We have seen leadership place political loyalty above constitutional duty. That is a betrayal of the oath of office. Secretary Noem must step aside or be removed. And if she is not, Congress has a responsibility to act via impeachment.

The overwhelming majority of law enforcement officers serve honorably and professionally. They deserve federal leadership that supports integrity, lawful conduct, and public trust. When leadership fails in that responsibility, Congress has an obligation to act.
