John,

Journalists are being arrested for doing their jobs. That is how democracies die.

Don Lemon was arrested while reporting on a protest at a church in Minnesota. His crime was witnessing power and telling the truth about it.

Let’s be clear. When the government arrests journalists for covering dissent, it is not law and order. It is fear. It is intimidation. It is the deliberate erosion of a free society.

This is not new. This is how democracies collapse. Slowly at first—then all at once. The press is silenced. Protest is criminalized. Power closes ranks.

I know what it means to confront—and defeat—fascist tactics like this

As a young attorney, I helped bring to justice the killers of a man targeted by a brutal dictatorship for speaking the truth. His name was Víctor Jara.

Jara was rounded up, tortured, and murdered because he refused to be silent in the face of fascism and authoritarian power. The Pinochet dictatorship feared his voice because it reached people, and because it told the truth.

That story is not ancient history. It is a warning.

Like so many brave Americans standing up today against ICE and this administration’s abuses of power, Víctor Jara understood something simple and dangerous to tyrants: silence is surrender.

Stephen Miller and those driving this machinery of fear would like dissent to disappear. They always do. Every authoritarian does.

I have stood up for justice and fought repressive regimes before. And I will do it again. These times call for tough leaders who have been tested and know what it’s like to take on big fights.

I am a first-generation Mexican-American. This fight is too important and personal to me to ever back down. Will you stand with me and help me win this critical swing seat so we can get more real fighters in Congress to stop this regime once and for all?
