Become an Election Judge

The City is seeking election judges to staff five precincts for the Primary Election on August 11 and the General Election on November 3, as well as to assist at City Hall beginning 46 days prior to each election. Serving as an election judge is a valuable service to the community.

Election judges are required to attend training before serving. Minnesota state law allows individuals to take time off from their regular jobs, without loss of wages, to serve on Election Day.

To qualify, individuals must be U.S. citizens, at least 18 years of age by Election Day, eligible to vote in Minnesota, and able to read, write, and speak English.

If you are interested in serving as an Election Judge, please visit the City’s website to print an Election Judge application. For questions or additional information, contact the city clerk.

Message from the Chief: We will get through this.

The only way to combat injustice, is with justice.

I know tensions are high right now. People feel helpless, confused, unsure of what to believe and who to trust. If you live in the communities of Mendota, Mendota Heights and Lilydale, I hope that we have had occasion to meet over the past 9 years that I have served as your chief. I hope that you have watched how members of the Mendota Heights Police Department operate day in and day out. I am asking you to reflect on that and decide if you trust me and the department enough to believe what I am about to tell you....

We will get through this, and we will do so together.

No matter your personal opinion of operation metro surge, there is no denying that tactics currently employed by the expedited removal teams in Minnesota is having a profoundly detrimental effect on the safety and security of our communities and in the relationships between local police departments and the people we serve.

Our officers are prohibited by law and policy from assisting ICE in civil immigration enforcement and they are equally prohibited from interfering with or obstructing federal agents carrying out their duties. Recently, we had an officer who was waived down by a motorist on a busy street, by the time the officer was in a position to contact the driver, ICE agents pulled up and began ordering the driver from the vehicle. Per policy, our officer did not assist or obstruct, but it gave the impression that the officer was working with ICE and it has led to anger and confusion from our community and the officer involved.

That is all I am going to say about what we "can't" do, and we are going to focus on what we, as a local police department can do.

We are going to enforce the law equitably and vigorously as we always have. If any person is driving recklessly, without valid license plates, or without due regard to public safety, we will take the steps necessary to enforce those laws. If someone attempts to enter your home without a warrant, call 911 and we will respond. If you are being followed, harassed, or are otherwise afraid, you can come to the Mendota Heights Police Department and we will sort it out as best we can. This goes for everyone.

We are going to focus on what we can control, and that is professional service with integrity and fairness to all.

As always, please feel free to email me at *[email protected]* with any questions.

Chief Kelly McCarthy
