Vermont Congresswoman Becca Balint has feared these moments for a long time. We have an administration that is invading its own cities, bullying state and local governments, and arresting journalists, as the Department of Justice this morning announced the arrest of Don Lemon and several others for documenting a protest at Cities Church in St. Paul, Minnesota.
The Democrat joined Susan J. Demas and reacted to this morning’s breaking news. “Don Lemon was there as a member of the press. And more and more, we need independent members of the press to be reporting. It is absolutely chilling that they are not just going after our First Amendment rights, freedom of assembly, freedom of speech, going after our second and fourth amendments, but now, now directly targeting the press overtly. And they believe that they will never be held to account.”
The country is still on edge after last weeks murder of Alex Pretti, the V.A. nurse who was murdered by federal agents last week in Minneapolis. Congresswoman Balint has been vocal in her opposition to funding the tactics of this agency, saying, “Hell no!” when she voted for the measure in the House. She’s called for the ouster of both DHS Secretary Kristi Noem and Stephen Miller.
“I think long term, we’re going to need a truth and reconciliation commission for this administration and all the lawlessness and all the corruption and the grift and all the ways in which Americans have had their rights absolutely violated by this administration and all the accomplices,” she said.
Watch more of what Congresswoman Balint had to say about being part of the Jack Smith hearing last week, the Trump DOJ’s raid on the Georgia election office, and much more here on Lincoln Square.
