This year, we will be sharing a short wrap-up with you every month, a chance to reflect on what’s happening at UNHCR and how your support continues to make a real difference in the lives of refugees and displaced people around the world.

In January, we welcomed Barham Ahmed Salih as the UNHCR’s new High Commissioner, building on the tireless leadership and lasting impact of our former High Commissioner Filippo Grandi in protecting refugees and displaced people worldwide. Salih steps into this role at a challenging time, as humanitarian funding has fallen sharply, leaving millions without the assistance they urgently need.

As a former refugee himself, he speaks in his first statement about what must remain at the heart of UNHCR’s work.

During his visit, Salih reiterated UNHCR’s readiness to work closely with the Government of Chad and other partners to implement the Integrated Settlement Approach, strengthening services for both refugees and host communities and expanding shared economic opportunities.

Salih looks forward to working closely with our UNHCR’s dedicated staff, states, partners, host communities, and, most importantly, refugees themselves, with a particular focus on advancing durable solutions that can provide lasting protection and meaningful opportunities.
