Each January, WRI highlights the major moments, issues and decisions that we believe will shape the world’s trajectory in the coming year.

This year’s Stories to Watch are not about emissions targets or biodiversity goals that will come due decades from now. They're about challenges many of us are grappling with today: rising housing and energy costs, precarious economies, job uncertainty.

We know that climate solutions can help address many of these struggles. Pursuing a low-carbon economy can create well-paying jobs, spur growth, cut costs and improve lives now — not just in the distant future.

But these outcomes aren’t guaranteed. They depend on the decisions our leaders make this year and beyond.

What we’re watching:

  • Will the low-carbon transition stall economic progress, or ignite a new era of inclusive prosperity?
  • Will climate action deepen the cost-of-living crisis, or become a pathway to affordability?
  • Will jobs in the new economy open doors to a brighter future for families everywhere, or leave too many behind?

WRI President and CEO Ani Dasgupta laid out how we can tackle climate and economic challenges together in 2026 — and where to look for signs of progress in the year ahead.
