John,

As you well know, the deployment of thousands of Department of Homeland Security (DHS) agents in Minnesota over the past month has resulted in terror and cruelty toward immigrant communities — and the violent deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti at the hands of law enforcement. The dangerous rise of a massive domestic federal armed force seemingly designed to terrorize citizens, documented immigrants with no criminal history, and even children is a disgraceful affront to our American values.

As my former House colleague Governor Tim Walz stated, the ICE incursion in Minnesota is truly “an inflection point” for our country. The refusal of President Trump, Secretary Kristi Noem and Stephen Miller to take responsibility as leaders of this reckless policy is a complete dereliction of duty. Their effort to smear the memories of these two victims and instead engage in vile character assassination is appalling and disgusting.

The events of the past few weeks have rightfully shocked our nation, and require congressional action. That’s why I have added my name to the impeachment resolution to remove Secretary Kristi Noem from office, and why I joined the rest of Connecticut’s House delegation to vote against giving the Department of Homeland Security a single cent. I do not make such a decision lightly, but ICE’s repeated malfeasance combined with the Trump administration’s attempts to block any oversight leave me with no choice. Kristi Noem is unfit for office, and she must be impeached if she won’t resign in disgrace.

If you agree, will you please sign my petition supporting the effort to impeach and remove DHS Secretary Kristi Noem? [[link removed]]SIGN ON [[link removed]]

The Constitution explicitly protects all of us from home invasion at the hands of law enforcement. And yet, it’s been revealed that the Department of Homeland Security has illegally authorized federal agents to enter private homes without a judicial warrant. I want to emphasize — this unprecedented growth of ICE was directly funded by Trump’s Big, Ugly Bill passed last year, which gave the agency more resources than the US Marine Corps. The Republican law also included a $1 trillion cut to Medicaid, permanent tax giveaways to billionaires, and a huge increase in the national debt. Of course, I voted against that legislation, and I’ve held many town halls and roundtables across the Second District to listen to the concerns of thousands of constituents.

As we head into one of the most consequential elections in our lifetime, the grave consequences of the Trump agenda underline the importance of flipping the House next year and restoring real congressional oversight. We must protect the public welfare and precious liberties we hold so dear.

Sincerely,

Joe Courtney
