U.S. States Decouple Economic Growth from Emissions  

Between 2005 and 2017, four of five U.S. states debunked the myth that economic growth can only occur by compromising the health of the planet. A New Climate Economy report finds that 41 U.S. states and the District of Colombia reduced their energy-related carbon dioxide emissions while increasing real GDP, bringing a low-carbon economy within reach. Governments provide $600 billion a year in agricultural subsidies in countries that generate two-thirds of the world’s agriculture. Yet, only 5% of the funding supports conservation objectives. Without the Ocean, National Accounts Are Incomplete 

GDP falls short in telling the economic story of the ocean. A new blue paper from the High Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy shows that countries could be omitting billions of dollars from their national accounts and suggests ways to improve accuracy. Read more.

Brooklyn Bridge Could Be a Landmark for Forest Conservation 

An international competition to reimagine New York City’s Brooklyn Bridge aims to make one of the world’s most iconic bridges safer, more accessible, and more sustainable. A joint entry by the WRI-led Cities4Forests, the Wildlife Conservation Society, and Pilot Projects Design Collective would include planks of sustainable tropical hardwood from Guatemala’s Maya Biosphere Reserve. Read more.
