Folks, I wanted to update you on where things stand with our campaign. We’ve had an incredibly busy six weeks since the launch.
Let me explain what we’ve been up to. Even if you’ve gotten involved in past campaigns - either in Alabama or around the country - this is going to be a little different.
You see, for far too long in Alabama, too many races have been unopposed. Even in really important races like Lieutenant Governor or Attorney General, it has been far too long since anyone other than the powerful Republican forces in Montgomery have put together a ticket.
What that means is that real change under the current system is basically impossible.
Montgomery has gotten away with rewarding powerful interests and ignoring the rest of us because many of them run unopposed. When you have no choices on your ballot, there is little reason to vote when it’s so clear your voice doesn’t matter. Anyone who’s sick of the status quo just doesn’t vote. Not just Democrats. Hundreds of thousands of Alabamians don’t make their voices heard because they don’t think anything is going to change.
I am running for Governor to change that. And I have worked tirelessly to build a ticket for change to do just that - give you a voice and a choice.
My entire campaign team (especially Louise) has been burning up the phone lines and meeting with really strong candidates for almost every statewide office, and Leader Anthony Daniels has put together a slate of legislative candidates we can all be really proud of:
Lt. Governor - Phillip Ensler
Attorney General - Jeff McLaughlin
Secretary of State - Wayne Rogers
State Treasurer - Rosilyn Houston
State Auditor - Violet Edwards
Agriculture Commissioner - Ron Sparks
In the coming weeks I’ll be introducing each of them individually to you.
Our “Change Ticket” has a powerful message at a time when Alabama desperately needs change. We’re going to win in places that nobody thought we could win. We’re going to run strong candidates in places that even when we can’t win every race, we’re going to help the rest of the ticket for change. That’s the path to victory. No more excuses.
When we say Montgomery doesn’t listen to us or respond to us, part of the reason that they just look out for themselves is no one has ever put together a coordinated effort to hold them accountable. And if I’m honest, how many of us have used that excuse on ourselves? “It’s not going to change because it’s the same thing happening and I can’t do anything about it.”
Now you can do something about it.
This is how we win, folks. We’re energizing voters across the state who for too long have had no reason to get out and vote. We’re changing that by the day, and come November, you’re going to see the results.
It is not an exaggeration to say we’re doing something that hasn’t been done in Alabama in decades. We’re running a true ticket for change. (I could make a bunch of sports metaphors, but with where things are in Alabama, this really isn’t a game.)
Of course this is going to be a lot of hard work. Of course we are going to have our ups and downs. Of course the powerful Republicans in Montgomery who do whatever they want are not going to go down without a fight. But this is the team of folks to do it.
We need you with us. I hope this sounds different not just from every other campaign in Alabama but most of the other campaigns around the country - because I believe it is. I wouldn’t be running for Governor if I didn’t believe in all my heart that we could really make change.

So often when I write and ask for money, which is the unfortunate reality when you’re up against gazillionaire corporate donors, folks ask me “Why should I give?” or “What’s it gonna do?”
Now we have our answer. You’re helping elect change. And we finally have the right folks to make that happen.
