This is a five-alarm fire.
When I was 33 years old, I became pregnant and got ready to welcome what I hoped was to be my second child. But at 12 weeks, I found out that the fetus had no heartbeat and had died about two weeks earlier.
The next day, I returned to the doctor to get a D&C, a procedure commonly used after miscarriages to expel fetal tissue. It’s the same procedure used in many abortions.
Now, my Republican colleagues have made it their mission to rip away access to life-saving reproductive health care services. They’ve cut funding for clinics like Planned Parenthood, they’ve eliminated coverage for reproductive health care through Medicaid, and they’ve attacked and spread harmful disinformation about Mifepristone — a safe and effective medication used for non-surgical abortions.
Having taken away a woman’s fundamental right to decide if and when to start a family, make her own health care decisions and control her own body, Republicans are suddenly concerned that a drug that has been used safely world wide for decades has side effects. (As of course does pregnancy).
And having allowed the state to use its coercive power to deny women the health care they need, Republicans are suddenly concerned that women might be coerced into taking Mifepristone. (Ignoring the fact that men have been coercing women to have abortions, or worse assaulting or murdering them because they are pregnant, for centuries.) It’s gaslighting at the highest level.
The GOP’s concerted effort to strip away reproductive health care has left millions without the care they desperately need and has led to an increase in infant and maternal mortality, particularly in states with abortion bans.
We’re in the fight of our lives. Please chip in to ensure we have the resources to elect the next generation of health care champions to the U.S. Senate — and defeat the Republican majority this November: [[link removed]]
