WHAT'S HAPPENING
GOV. LUJAN GRISHAM: PUBLIC SCHOOLS WILL HAVE ONLINE CLASSES UNTIL AT LEAST AFTER LABOR DAY

Gov. Lujan Grisham has announced that New Mexico public schools will not hold in-person classes until at least after September 7. She said depending on the COVID-19 situation, schools may administer a hybrid model with elementary school students starting this first. The governor cites her decision based on science and public health, but the science isn't there. Morality rates are low in the state, and evidence throughout the world show that schools aren't places where COVID-19 spreads. In addition, where's the fairness to our students—Walmarts have people inside crammed together, but we can't social distance at schools? It's also important to note that the governor fails to realize that her decision to hold online classes will shut out many poor families that do not have access to computers or internet. This has become a class divide.

Here's RPNM Chairman Pearce's comments following the governor's announcement:

"The governor's decision to have online learning through at least Labor Day is an affront to many working class New Mexicans who can't stay home to monitor t
heir children. This will be a financial burden on thousands of parents who must provide for their families. The governor, whose net wort
h is many times more than the average New Mexican, should also be reminded that her state is not wealthy, and many children don't have access to computers and the internet. What happens to them? Gov. Lujan Grisham sees things through her high-income lens, but many of our kids depend on classroom computers in public schools. New Mexico is already dead last in education, and suspending critical in-person schooling will further destroy our embarrassing educational system. All this could be avoided if students went to school and safely practiced social distancing. It makes no sense for New Mexicans to be allowed to cram into Targets and Walmarts and not have a sensible, safe, social distancing policy to educate our precious kids. Our Chief Executive is defying logic and dividing students into two different types of classes."

WASHINGTON SENDING IN FEDERAL AGENTS TO ALBUQUERQUE TO ADDRESS VIOLENT CRIME
President Trump and U.S. Attorney General William Barr have announced that dozens of federal agents to come to Albuquerque as part of Operation Legend. That initiative is designed to help stop rising crime in the city. Albuquerque is among a handful of cities targeted by the Trump Administration. Sen. Martin Heinrich has called the agents "stormtroopers" while Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller labeled them "secret police." This is irresponsible and suggests pre-World War II Nazi Germany tactics. What Washington is doing is helping a crime-ridden Albuquerque deal with its problem. We need to protect our law-abiding citizens and the police and actually fix this problem. Our city and state leaders have continued to kick this problem down the road while our communities remain unsafe. The federal agents are being called in to make sure law and order comes to the Duke City.

GOVERNOR DEFENDS PUBLIC EDUCATION SECRETARY WORKING FROM PHILADELPHIA
As New Mexico wrestles with the crisis of public education in this pandemic, it's shocking to learn that the state's top education leader, Ryan Stewart, is managing New Mexico's education system from Philadelphia. That's right. For the last few months, Public Education Secretary Stewart has been at his home in Pennsylvania running things. He claims COVID-19 kept he and his family there. Meanwhile, Gov. Lujan Grisham says she's confident he can do his work.

What? How can the Education Secretary be in tune with what's happening on the schools front while living in Philadelphia. This is the kind of typical behavior we are all expecting from the Lujan Grisham Administration. While New Mexicans are all grappling with restriction after restriction, we are expected to accept regulations from a governor who has acted above her own laws and a public education secretary who has been out of the state for months. This is a real problem and irresponsible.
