Chairing a Hearing on President Trump’s Whole-of-Government Border Security Approach
Last week, I held a hearing to examine U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s CBP use of non-intrusive inspection NII technology, a critical tool for detecting and interdicting illicit narcotics, concealed currency, contraband, and individuals being smuggled across our borders. Recognizing its importance, House Republicans’ reconciliation package signed into law by President Trump last year included more than $1 billion to expand and modernize NII capabilities. This technology serves as a force multiplier for frontline personnel and is an essential component of effective border security. As Congress evaluates President Trump’s whole of government approach to securing the border, we must ensure CBP uses every resource at its disposal to sustain and build upon the historic success achieved at the Southwest border. Tax Relief Information for Tax Season 2026
During President Trump’s first term, Congress enacted the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, the most significant overhaul of the U.S. tax code in more than 30 years, simplifying taxes for families and advancing pro-growth, pro-business policies. The TCJA doubled the standard deduction and the child tax credit, delivering an average 16 percent tax cut to Americans earning under $100,000 and increasing real median household income by roughly $5,000. In 2024, voters again entrusted Republicans with unified control of government, and the 119th Congress acted swiftly to prevent a $4.5 trillion tax increase by making key TCJA provisions permanent while expanding relief for working families. This legislation increases the standard deduction by $1,500, raises the child tax credit to $2,200 with annual inflation adjustments, and boosts after-tax income by an average of 2.9 percent—cutting taxes by nearly 15 percent for Americans earning under $50,000 and providing the average family of four making under $100,000 an additional $600 in tax relief. Outlined below are the keyways Congress has delivered tax relief to American families, workers, and businesses.
