In an ahead-of-print article published this month, Micah Hartman and colleagues at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released their 2024 health care spending report.

Key takeaways from the report include:
U.S. health care spending rose 7.2% in 2024 to $5.3 trillion, mirroring 2023’s growth and driven by increased use and intensity of hospital care, physician services, and prescription drugs.
Insurance coverage remained high, with 91.8% of the population insured in 2024, only slightly below the 2023 peak.
Health spending continued to outpace economic growth, increasing health care’s share of the economy from 17.7% in 2023 to 18.0% in 2024.
