"“This is no longer about policy – it’s about politics. And people are getting hurt. Both sides must dial back the rhetoric and allow cooler heads to prevail.”"
Dear Friends,
My heart breaks to see the disruption, violence, and death that is taking place in Minneapolis. It has become clear to me that this is no longer about policy; it’s about politics – and the result is that people, both law enforcement and protesters, are getting hurt. Both sides must dial back the temperature and rhetoric and allow cooler heads to prevail. People deserve to come before politics.
Almost everyone agrees that criminal illegal immigrants like rapists, murderers, gang members, and pedophiles should be removed from this country immediately. Let’s focus on the most effective way to make that happen. No one wants these dangerous criminals on our streets. All other states in our nation, both red and blue, have found ways to work with the feds to achieve this unified goal without all the chaos and harm. There is no reason Minnesota cannot do so.
The federal government has the right and duty to enforce legal immigration. Watching our governor and other elected officials make irresponsible and sometimes disingenuous statements to the public - pouring gasoline on the flames of volatile conditions - has been incredibly concerning. It has brought us to the point where ordinary citizens think violence is condoned. This is unacceptable and must stop. Minnesotans deserve leaders who are cool headed, measured, and thoughtful. Frankly, these leaders need to think more instead of making reckless statements.
This all begs the question, if cooler heads had prevailed would our state be in the dangerous predicament we’re in now?
Minnesota must allow for the safe and orderly removal of criminal illegal immigrants from our state – the enforcement of existing federal law. This means finding ways to cooperate and coordinate with federal immigration authorities to have a more targeted approach to apprehending these criminals. Allowing federal agents to make locally controlled and orderly pick-ups at jail sites, instead of out in the communities, would dramatically decrease the need for the number of federal law enforcement agents in Minnesota, bring a much-needed reduction in tension, and greatly increase public safety.
Had this coordination happened initially, we would not be experiencing what we are now, and both the public and law enforcement would be much safer.
Any unlawful actions by federal law enforcement, including possible racial profiling, should be reported and addressed immediately. Equally, the unlawful confrontational tactics by protesters that interfere with law enforcement duties, putting both protesters and law enforcement lives at risk, must also be strongly and swiftly addressed. There is no place in our state for conduct like this. Throughout all, we must always continue to respect the constitutional rights of Minnesotans to peacefully protest and safely observe law enforcement actions.
I am pleased that our governor and the president are talking. It is my sincere hope that this is genuine, and they will come together and unite under our common goal of keeping the public safe. That, after all, is our primary and unifying goal.
Let’s find a way to work together on this issue so we can concentrate on the issues of fraud, corruption, dysfunction, and mismanagement. Minnesota deserves that.
Have a good weekend,
Peggy
